Lahoal blow to Liberty

Guwahati, Feb. 10: Lahoal Youth Club defeated Liberty Club, Dibrugarh by three wickets in the sixth Amarjyoti Gogoi and Anup Phukon Upper Assam invitation prize-money cricket tournament at Moran College Ground today.

Batting first, Liberty were restricted to 184 in 28.1 overs. Middle-order batsman Atik Ahmed steadied their innings after a few early jolts with a quickfire 49 off 35 balls while Hajib Ahmed chipped in with a sedate 25. Surajit Sengupta later contributed 12 off 12 balls.

For Lahoal, medium pacer Dilip Patel bagged five wickets for 57 runs in six overs while Ranjit Mehta bagged two for 37 runs.

In reply, Lahoal, too, lost early wickets but a counter attack by the middle order ensured a successful chase as they raced to 187 for seven in 29.3 overs.

Man of the Match Rajib Phukan was the highest contributor with an unbeaten knock of 72 off 73 balls while Roushan Pandey played the sheet anchorís role with a controlled 34 off 56 balls. Monu Gogoi thereafter played a cameo with 22 runs off 14 balls.

For Liberty, medium pacer Abbas Ahmed bagged two scalps for 37 runs while Rajesh Pal and Shahbaz Ahmed took one wicket each.

Twenty-one teams from Upper Assam are taking part in the tournament organised jointly by Alpine Boys Club and Moran unit of AJYCP. The winners will bag Rs 25,000 while the runners-up will get Rs 15,000.
