Chilli powder escape

Chinsurah, Feb. 10: Six accused in a rape and murder case escaped from a prison van after throwing chilli powder in the eyes of the four policemen escorting them to Hooghly district jail from a local court.

According to the police, the six persons — Jiko Pal, 24, Lakshmikanta Chakraborty, 47, his son Avijit Chakraborty, 25, Biswajit Chakraborty, 39, Raja Das, 26, and Deepankar Karmakar, 25 — are accused in murder, rape and robbery cases of 2012.

Around 8pm this evening, when the prison van was about 1km from the jail, the accused staged a scuffle among themselves.

“When the policemen went to control them, one of them threw chilli powder in their eyes. Then they stabbed three of the constables with a small knife. The six of them then unlocked the gate of the van and jumped out of the running vehicle,” a police officer said.

The driver of the prison van stopped the vehicle and informed the police station 500 metres away.

“The injured policemen were admitted to Chinsurah Imambara Hospital,” said a police officer.
