2 GNLA rebels shot dead

Goalpara, Feb. 9: Two militants of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) were killed by 7th Jat Regiment of the army at Barjhara along the Assam-Meghalaya border under Lakhipur police station, nearly 50km from Goalpara, last night.

According to army sources, the two militants were travelling on a motorcycle and started firing when asked to stop.

The jawans were then compelled to retaliate and shoot them.

“We suspected the two persons riding a bike and told them to stop. But they suddenly attacked us. We were compelled to shoot and they died on the spot,” said an army source.

Security forces found one 9mm pistol, one 7.65mm pistol, one satellite phone, one watch phone, live bullets, blank cartridges and two mobile phones on them.

The people of the area said the GNLA rebels continue to extort money from the people living along the Assam-Meghalaya border in Goalpara district.

“We are living in great fear. Members of the GNLA frequently come into the villages and demand huge sums of money. They torture people who refuse to meet their demands. This place is not at all secure,” said a resident of the area.
