Probe on in Bhrigu kin death

Guwahati, Feb. 8: Police are probing the death of Naba Phukan, the younger brother of former Assam home minister Bhrigu Kumar Phukan, who died of burn injuries under mysterious circumstances here yesterday.

Police said Phukan, 54, was spotted lying by a roadside near his Kharghuli residence with severe burn injuries on the lower part of his body by some passersby in the morning. He was admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where he succumbed to his injuries.

The police suspect that he could have been set ablaze by someone but are yet to get any clue about how the incident took place. An unnatural death case has been registered at Latasil police station and an autopsy was conducted at the GMCH.

A police source said a resident of the area where Phukan was found injured had told them that they had heard someone shouting late at night but had not come out to see what was happening.

“Investigations are on but we are yet to make a breakthrough,” he said.

Additional SP (city crime unit), Amitava Sinha, said prima facie it appeared to be an accident but investigations were on. “It seems his trouser caught fire from a burning cigarette. We are probing the matter,” he said.

Another police officer at Latasil police station said he was under the influence of alcohol when the incident took place.
