Student ‘stabs’ classmate

Calcutta, Feb. 1: A Class XII student was stabbed in the leg and shoulder by a classmate just outside the school near Park Street this morning.

Police said the attack may have been the fallout of a classroom quarrel between Mohammad Owais, 18, and the alleged attacker, Mohammad Ahmed, a week ago.

A heavily bleeding Owais was discharged from hospital after first aid. Ahmed has been arrested and charged with attempt to murder.

Owais had just stepped out of the main gate of Saifee Hall School in Park Lane around 11.30am when he was attacked with a knife. Alerted by Owais’s cries for help, passers-by overpowered Ahmed and handed him over to the police.

“Ahmed dragged my son by the collar and attacked him with an eight-inch knife,” said Owais’s father Shakil-ur-Rahman, who works in a tannery.

“They had quarrelled recently after Ahmed kept disturbing him for days. The school suspended both of them but allowed them to appear in the ongoing exam.”

A school official said: “I can only say that one of the (two) students had come today. The other has been absenting himself for reasons best known to him.”

A police officer said Ahmed, whose father is a trader, and Owais had been suspended after they fought several times in school. Both are students of the commerce stream.
