Tehelka case

Panaji, Jan. 31: Goa police today registered a case against unknown person/s for disclosing the identity of the journalist allegedly sexually assaulted by Tehelka founder-editor Tarun Tejpal, and for circulating “defamatory” emails against her.

The police move comes after a complaint by the young journalist. “We have filed the FIR under Section 228 A and Section 506 of the IPC and Section 66A of the IT Act. Our cybercell is investigating the matter,” Goa deputy inspector-general O.P. Mishra told The Telegraph.

The lady journalist had complained to Goa police that her photograph that was available on the Tehelka server had been circulated without her consent via email among several members of society, including senior media persons.

The journalist’s statement was recorded by the crime branch in Mumbai yesterday. Tejpal is currently lodged in Sada sub-jail in Goa, after his bail petition was rejected by a local court.
