Strike cuffs on four

Jan. 27: The 12-hour strike called by tribal outfits in the Dooars and Terai today in protest against the alleged gang rape in Birbhum last week was partial and four people were arrested.

“Four persons, including Progressive Peoples’ Party president Kiran Kalindi, have been arrested for trying to enforce the strike in Nagrakata,” said Kunal Aggarwal, the Jalpaiguri superintendent of police.

Shops, establishments and offices were closed and private transport didn’t operate in Nagrakata, Banarhat, Malbazar, Metelli, Madarihat, Birpara and Hatipota.

The strike, however, failed to have an impact in the Terai and other parts of Jalpaiguri district like Alipurduar, Mainaguri, Jalpaiguri, Falakata and Dhupguri.

The strike was called by three outfits.
