Republic Day telecast in HD

New Delhi, Jan. 25: Public broadcaster Doordarshan will for the first time telecast the Republic Day celebrations from India Gate and the Beating Retreat ceremony from Vijay Chowk in high definition on its DD-HD channel.

Before this, Ehsaas-e-Kashmir — Zubin Mehta’s concert in Jammu and Kashmir last year — was the first event that DD had covered live in high definition, a system that transmits pictures with more lines per frame, thus providing significantly higher resolution than traditional standard definition formats.

While Sunday’s coverage would be simulcast in standard definition on all DD channels, the high definition content will also be streamed live on YouTube.

“The picture quality of this year’s coverage in high definition will be substantially superior to standard definition as the resolution of high definition is six times that of standard definition,” said an official in Prasar Bharati that runs DD.

For the upgraded transmission, more than a hundred Doordarshan personnel from technical, programme and administrative fields have been working in tandem to ensure uninterrupted telecast, the official added. Doordarshan will have eighteen high definition cameras in strategic positions at India Gate and Rajghat to cover the entire spectacle.
