Headman abducted in Garo hills

Tura, Jan. 24: The abduction of headman Kredinath M. Sangma in East Garo Hills has sparked a fear psychosis in Songsak-Bonegre, a remote village nearly 130 km from here.

The headman was kidnapped by suspected dacoits at around 11 last night. Police have ruled out the involvement of militants in the abduction.

Superintendent of police J.F.K. Marak said: “We strongly feel that Kredinath Sangma was abducted by a local dacoit.” He had received Rs 78 lakh as compensation for land recently. The police are investigating this angle.

Marak said, “Someone close to the village headman may be involved in his abduction.” The ongoing construction of National Highway 44 (E) from Jengjal in West Garo hills via Songsak to Nongch-ram in East Garo hills has posed a threat to beneficiaries, who have received land compensation.

At least five headmen have been kidnapped for ransom from Songsak to Nongchram in the last three months.
