Navajyoti wreck Shahid Minar

Guwahati, Jan. 23: Navajyoti Club registered a thumping 116-run victory over Calcutta outfit Shahid Minar Cricket Club in their match of the 12th Jugal Kishore Newatia Bud Challenge Cricket Tournament at Judges Field here today.

The match witnessed a fine show by Navajyoti spinner Bikash Chetri who returned with a five-wicket haul, which also earned him the Man of the Match award.

Electing to bat, Navajyoti batsmen took full advantage of the situation to put up a competitive total of 208 runs before being bundled out in 39.4 overs. Parag Kr Das topscored with 71 runs off 57 balls while Nishanta Bordoloi chipped in with 56 runs off 73 deliveries.

Abhimanyu Yadav was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets for 41 runs in his allotted 10 overs while Shubhash Kumar scalped two wickets conceding 29 runs in his 4.4 overs. Chasing the target, the Calcutta side was bundled out for a paltry 92 runs in 31 overs.

Subhash Kumar scored 38 runs off 50 deliveries. Bikash Chetri was the wrecker-in-chief with five wickets for 25 runs in his 10 overs.

National weightlifting: Pompi Saikia clinched a silver medal while Chandana Gogoi managed a bronze medal for hosts Assam in the 59th National School Games Weightlifting for under-17 and under-19 girls at Bhogeswari Phukanani Indoor Stadium here today.

Assam now tally five medals, including four silver medals and one bronze.

Santosh Trophy team: The Assam Football Association announced the state team for the zonal round of the 68th Senior National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy to be held in Aizawl from January 28.
