Bar dancer killed in city

Guwahati, Jan. 20: A transgender bar dancer was allegedly set on fire by four persons last night inside a rented house here at Pub Sarania.

Suman Singh, 20, succumbed to burn injuries at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) after being admitted there by police last night.

The police today arrested Suman’s roommate Hema Khan who is also a transgender, and three others — Prashanta Das, Montu Rahman and Barnali Das — on charges of murder.

The police said according to preliminary investigations, Suman was set on fire following a quarrel among the five in the room. “Suman and Hema used to stay together and the three others visited them around 11pm. Suman ran out of the house after being set on fire and was screaming for help on Rajgarh Road with severe burn injuries. A patrol vehicle reached the spot after a resident of the area informed Chandmari police station. Suman was admitted to the GMCH and died around 5am,” a police officer said.

“We are probing the reason behind the quarrel. We suspect that they had a quarrel over money,” the source said.

The police are, however, yet to ascertain Suman’s original address. They are also questioning Prasanna Talukdar, Suman’s landlord.

A case (34/2014) has been registered at Chandmari police station and the four have been booked under Sections 320 (murder) and 34 (criminal act with common intention) of the IPC. All the arrested persons were produced in a local court today and remanded in judicial custody.
