Rain washes out play on first day

Mohali: Persistent rain led to a washout of the first day of the Ranji Trophy semi-final between Punjab and Karnataka, here, on Saturday.

Even when rain stopped, the ground conditions at the PCA Stadium were just not suitable enough to action get underway.

The forecast for Sunday is brighter though, with no rain expected. However, heavy fog has been a problem over the past few days, and it could cause delays. In case, the first innings of the two teams isn't completed after five days, there is an additional day available to ensure at least a first-innings result.

If it doesn’t rain on Sunday, the umpires will try to make up for the lost time by having an early start. Earlier in the group stage encounter between the two sides, Punjab were comprehensively beaten by Karnataka in Hubli, last month.

Punjab had made it to the semi-finals last season and would certainly look to play the summit clash after nine years. Karnataka, who were ousted in the quarter-final stage last stage, would also like to move a step closer to their seventh title.
