Meiraba open in style

Imphal, Jan. 17: Meiraba Polo Club (A) galloped past Eastern Studentsí Club with a 5-1 goal win in the inaugural match of the 29th N. Hazaru and N. Tombi State Polo Tournament, 2014, which got under way at Mapal Kangjeibung here today.

Both teams had a slow start, rendering the first chukker goalless. Meiraba Polo Club pushed up the tempo in the second chukker with K. Romeo fetching the opening goal for his team for the lead. Eastern Studentsí Club were in a tight spot with Meiraba Polo Club hammering in three more goals.

S. Jemson netted two goals in quick succession in the 46th and 48th seconds in the third chukker.

N. Nanao Singh later fetched one more goal for Meiraba.

In the fourth chukker, with their reputation at stake, Eastern Students Club managed to score their lone goal through N. Prabin Singh in the 42nd second to trail by 1-4 goals.

However, Meiraba Polo Club dashed their hopes of returning to the game with N. Nanao Singh striking home his teamís fifth goal in the 6.55th minute, to show the door to Eastern Students Club.

Match official: The AIFF has appointed Rinkahao Vashum as one of the match officials of the 118th IFA Shield to be held in Calcutta.

Wushu medals: Assam clinched a total of 13 medals, including six silver and seven bronze medals, in the 59th National School Games in New Delhi from January 2 to 8. The under-19 team bagged the runners-up title with five silver and four bronze medals.
