Mumbai, Jan. 16: Rohit Talwalkar, a director of the company that runs the Talwalkars chain of gyms, has been held over his firm’s alleged service tax evasion of Rs 2.85 crore.

According to service tax authorities, Talwalkars Fitness Solutions Pvt Ltd collected the sum as taxes from September 2008 to December 2012 from customers but did not deposit the amount with the department. The charge carries a jail term of up to seven years.

“After learning that the company had been defaulting for over four years on the tax, we arrested Rohit Talwalkar, one of the directors of the company, yesterday,” a tax official said.
