Assault charge on Manipur pugilist

Imphal, Jan. 16: Police are looking for Asian Games boxing gold medallist Ngangom Dingko Singh in connection with a case of assault of three girl students at the SAI Special Area Games (SAG) centre, Imphal, on Monday.

Dingko Singh was a coach at the SAG centre.

According to an FIR lodged by the family of Soibam Aranbala, one of the girls, Dingko went to the hostel at 7.30pm, called out the three girls and assaulted them with a stick at the volleyball ground inside the SAG complex near the hostel.

Aranbala, 17, from Moreh in Chandel district, has been admitted to Shija Hospitals after her condition worsened last night because of injuries sustained in the assault.

The two other girls are Chungkha Kamei, 17, from Tamenglong district and Yaifabi, 17, from Ukhrul district. Their condition is reported to be stable.

Aranbala had admitted to writing oja Dingko, meaning teacher Dingko, on the dust-covered glass of his car, which was parked at the centre. Dingko had gone to the centre with his wife and children.

However, she said someone had later added the words, “Aranbala, I love you”.

Sources have speculated that after Dingko’s family, probably his wife, discovered the writing, she had a heated argument with him.

Dingko then went to the hostel to meet the students.

“We have registered a case on the basis of a complaint lodged by the family of Aranbala. We are trying to arrest the coach. At the moment he is absconding,” an officer of the Imphal West police station said.

The police have recorded the girls’ statements and are searching for Dingko.
