Lady body found, rape suspected

Malda, Jan. 10: The body of an unidentified woman was found with her clothes partly removed in an agricultural field at Battali near here today.

Police said the woman seemed to be in her early 20s and they suspected that she had been raped and strangled to death. Battali is in Ratua block and 28km from Malda.

“A scarf was found on the neck and the body was semi-clad. A few pieces of clothes and a pair of sandals were lying near the body. We suspect that she was raped and strangulated to death,” said a source at Ratua police station.

The police said the body had injuries with bones being exposed. “The injuries show that after the woman was murdered, dogs or some other animals nibbled at the body,” said the source.

The location where the body was found is close to a patch of forest, with no human habitat in a radius of 3km. A salwar-kurta was also found eight to 10m away from the body. Hundreds of people from the nearby villages assembled at the spot and none of them could identify the deceased. “It seems she is not a local resident. The woman must have been brought to the place by her assailants,” said a police officer.
