Assam go down to Kerala

Guwahati, Jan. 9: Hosts Assam went down to Kerala and Uttar Pradesh in two league matches to go out of contention for a knockouts berth in the 36th junior boys’ national handball championship at Jorhat District Sports Association ground today.

While Kerala crushed Assam 21-10, Uttar Pradesh defeated home side 26-16 in the group D league encounters.

The other northeastern states in the meet, Manipur and Tripura, were also grounded in their respective group league matches today.

Bihar handed a 22-15 defeat to Manipur in a group A match while Punjab humiliated Tripura 24-3 in a group D fixture to be in strong contention for a knockouts berth. They will meet Uttar Pradesh in their last group league match tomorrow.

In group A, Chandigarh will meet Jharkhand. Madhya Pradesh meet Haryana in group B and National Handball Academy lock horns with Sports Authority of India in group C in the morning session tomorrow to book semi-final berths. Madhya Pradesh held Maharashtra to a 24-24 draw in a group B encounter.
