Plea for new courts in Siliguri

Siliguri, July 26: An apolitical organisation from Bhaktinagar has filed an application in the Calcutta High Court seeking a directive to the state government to set up new courts in Siliguri and transfer the jurisdiction of Bhaktinagar police station to these courts from Jalpaiguri.

“The Siliguri police commissionerate was formed on August 5, 2012. But the metropolitan magistrate’s court and the metropolitan sessions judge’s court are yet to be established in the commissionerate area,” said Sunil Kumar Sarkar, the president of the Brihattar Siliguri Nagarik Mancha.

“Bhaktinagar police station is in the commissionerate but civil and criminal matters continue to be within the jurisdiction of Jalpaiguri courts. This is causing inconvenience to thousands of people who need to travel over 50km to Jalpaiguri for administrative and legal matters,” he added.
