Rahman sets stadium date III

A.R. Rahman

Paper mashaals had bathed the stands when Salt Lake stadium rocked to A.R. Rahman’s Chhaiya, chhaiya at The Telegraph Unity of Light Concert in February 2003. The venue was the same but the song had changed in November 2009 — “Jai ho” shouted the crowd. Come October 1, the venue will still be the stadium but this time expect Sadda haq and Tum tak...

Rahman will kick off his four-city tour of India in Calcutta four days before Mahalaya. Titled RahmanIshq, the concerts will be a blend of top-notch dance arrangements, visual effects and state-of-the-art technology.

“We hope that this will mark a new beginning for many more such tours that will set a benchmark in the music industry,” said the music maestro.

Put together by Rapport Global Events and Techfront, the India gigs will be preceded by a performance at Sydney’s All Phones Arena on August 24. Musicians keeping him company include Sukhwinder Singh, Javed Ali, Shweta Pandit, Ranjit Barot, Neeti Muhan, Harshdeep Kaur and Vijay Prakash. The tickets go on sale from August 15.

Rahman’s attachment with Calcutta goes back to the 2003 concert, his first live gig in India. After singing “Kolkata, Kolkata, don’t worry Kolkata…”, he had said: “I couldn’t have hoped for a more encouraging start.”

Time for an encore?
