5 held for bank fraud

Five men were arrested on Friday for allegedly duping Punjab National Bank of around Rs 39 lakh by forging a cheque. The police said a cheque for Rs 42.71 lakh, purportedly issued by the education department of Assam, was deposited in the Behala branch of the bank in May. The depositors withdrew Rs 38.91 lakh. The five arrested have been identified as Nirmal Sinha, Raj Kafur, Sabris, Jitendra Ratnakar and Abhijit Sarkar. The police said Sinha, Raj Kafur, Sabris were involved in an earlier bank fraud, too.

Bypass traffic

Traffic on the Bypass between the Science City and Ruby hospital crossings came to a halt on Friday evening for over two hours. A traffic department officer blamed the disruption on the construction of pillars for the New Garia-airport Metro link and poor condition of the road near VIP Bazar. Many south-bound vehicles were diverted through the Park Circus connector.

A gang of six dacoits broke into the house of Kalipada Mondal, 52, in Howrah’s Sondanga, and took away jewellery worth Rs 2 lakh and Rs 5,000 early on Friday. The gang also beat up Mondal, his wife, son and daughter.
