Abduction bid foiled, 4 in net

Dhanbad, July 6: An alert police force acted promptly and foiled the abduction plot of a businessman from Gujarat by arresting four persons, including the mastermind, an hour before they were to commit the crime in Dhanbad’s Katras today.

Vikas Kumar Singh, alias Bittu Singh had hatched the plot to kidnap his boss Amrit Bhai Patel, businessman-cum-chief manager of Mahalaxmi Enterprises that has undertaken a multi-crore coal mining project at Ram Kanali of Katras. Bittu was in-charge at the mining site.

The other three arrested are sharpshooters Pintu Kumar Singh and Pramod Kumar Singh, both from Bhagalpur in Bihar, and Sonu Kumar Singh from Kumardhubi in Dhanbad to execute the abduction. Two pistols, four cartridges and one sharp dagger have been recovered from them.

“Bittu had hired the three men to execute the abduction. The three were supposed to kidnap Patel along with Bittu so that no one could point a finger at him or suspect his role in the kidnap. They were to kidnap Patel, along with Bittu in his car, between Katras and Dhanbad,” superintendent of police (SP) of Dhanbad Anup Matthew said at a news conference, where the four were produced.

Matthew added that the police first nabbed the three sharpshooters. Later, on the basis of information provided by them, Bittu, who hails from Lalmatia of Godda, was arrested.

According to the SP, Bittu had been working in Patel’s company for the past three years and gradually won the confidence of the affluent businessman, who visits Dhanbad quite often.

Police sources said after becoming the site in-charge of the company, Bittu hatched a conspiracy to kidnap Patel and hired Pintu and Pramod — several cases are pending against the two in Bihar — for the job. Later, he roped in Sonu, promising huge money if the plan succeeded.

However, some policemen spotted the three criminals moving around in a suspicious manner at Ram Kanali for the past few days. On cross-checking with local residents, they came to know that they were new faces in the locality and had been spotted with Bittu.

“After the arrest, the trio spilled the beans. Call details of their mobile phones confirmed that they were in touch with Bittu,” the SP said.
