Kaberi claims double crown

Guwahati, Feb. 20: Home girl Kaberi Phukan of North East Zone and N. Shrujan of South Zone claimed double crowns in badminton in the FCI inter-zone badminton and table tennis championship that concluded at Sports Authority of India complex here today.

Phukan lifted the womenís singles title, defeating Khiranky Sengupta of East Zone 21-12, 21-9 in the final this evening while Shrujan prevailed over Alwyn Francis of the same zone 21-16, 21-14 for the menís singles title.

On Tuesday, Phukan prevailed over Kadambari of West 21-14, 21-7 in first womenís singles match of the team event finals.

The tandem of Phukan and Harshita Chaliha got the better of Ishani and Kadambari 21-15, 21-12 in the doubles encounter for the title with a 2-0 victory.

In the menís team event finals, Shrujan beat Mayank of North 21-19, 21-17 in the singles match and the former teamed up with Alwyn Francis to beat Mayank and Manish 21-16, 21-7 in the doubles match.

Shivananda Sheshadri of South Zone won the menís singles title in table tennis, overcoming Sameer Sahani of North Zone in the final today.

In the womenís final, Sayani Bose of East Zone got the better of another East competitor, Trisha Das, for the singles title. The East Zone women had won the womenís team event yesterday while South claimed the menís title as North finished runners-up in both the events.
