Ronaldo’s own-goal in 0-1 loss

Madrid: Real Madrid’s dismal season went from bad to worse when Cristiano Ronaldo scored an own-goal to hand relegation-threatened Granada a shock 1-0 win. There were doubts over whether or not Ronaldo would play as he is struggling with an ankle injury and his mood didn’t improve when he headed a Granada corner into his own goal after 22 minutes on Saturday.

Nations Cup

Rustenburg: Nigeria knocked out Ivory Coast in the quarter finals of the African Nations Cup on Sunday, defeating the favourites 2-1. Sunday Mba and Emmanuel Emenike scored Nigeria.

Nabi confident

Calcutta: Syed Rahim Nabi said India are ready to take on Palestine in an international friendly at Kochi on Wednesday. “The camaraderie in the national squad is what makes you feel special. Everyone looks fit… We are confident and are raring to go. This is a very important match for us and we need to be on our toes.”

IFA Shield

Calcutta: The IFA has roped in Bangladeshi club Muktijoddha to participate in the IFA Shield, which is likely to start from March 1. An IFA official said that they are also in talks with a European club.

Vettel view

Milton Keynes: Red Bull unveiled their RB9 car that will look to provide the team with their fourth straight driver and constructor titles at the end of the season. Speaking on the occasion, reigning triple world champion Sebastian Vettel said: “People expect something from us but more than that we expect to do well ourselves. I don’t expect any miracles but equally I expect a very long and very tough season.”

Calcutta: GMs Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Abhijeet Gupta, Sandipan Chanda, D. Harika and Mary Ann Gomes along with IM Diptayan Ghosh won their respective matches in the first round of the Moscow Open chess on Saturday.

New Delhi: Indian athletes have won 20 medals, including six gold, in the ongoing 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games at Pyeong Chang, South Korea.

Wrestling meet

New Delhi: Geeta Phogat (59 kg) and Bajrang (60 kg) won a silver medal each in the men’s and women’s category respectively, in the Dave Schultz Memorial International Wrestling Tournament at Colorado Springs. Sandeep Tomar (55kg) was the bronze medal winner in free style event.

Blood donation

Calcutta: The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) celebrated its 85th Foundation Day with 1483 people donating blood at the annual camp at Eden Gardens and across 16 district headquarters of the state on Sunday. The blood donation camp is dedicated in memory of the legendary Sir Frank Worrell. CAB handed out certificates signed by former India captain Srinivas Venkataraghavan.
