Militants storm jail in Garo hills

Shillong, Feb. 2: Heavily armed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) rebels today stormed Williamnagar district jail in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills where they shot dead the assistant jailor and injured a warder.

The incident occurred around 9pm against the backdrop of the preparation for the Assembly polls to be held on February 23.

“GNLA cadres entered Williamnagar district jail and shot dead assistant jailor Neil Warjri. The warder Sharai Sing Thabah was seriously injured in the jail compound near the gate,” East Garo Hills deputy commissioner Vijay Kumar Mantri told The Telegraph from New Delhi.

Mantri said the unspecified number of GNLA cadres entered the office of the district jail through the main gate, which was usually used only by the jail staff. Another gate is utilised by undertrial prisoners.

“The office has three rooms, and the cadres entered one of them where they shot dead the assistant jailor while injuring the warder,” Mantri said, stating that the incident was clearly an “act of terror”.

While no undertrial prisoner managed to flee from the jail, Mantri said the cadres fled from the scene after the shooting.

The injured have been taken to a hospital in Williamnagar. Police have also launched an operation against the GNLA.
