PU promotion promise

This Holi promises to be great for the 2003 batch Patna University (PU) teachers. If vice-chancellor (VC) Shambhu Nath Singh’s verbal assurance holds true, they would get promotions before the festival of colours.

At the annual senate meeting of the varsity at Wheeler Senate Hall on Wednesday, Singh assured the teachers appointed in 2003 of promotions.

Singh told The Telegraph: “Promotions are due for a long time. The process is lengthy but we have started it. Certain technical and situational difficulties delayed the process. But several formalities have been completed now.”

Singh said: “A seven-member selection committee would finalise the procedure. Since the members are from outside, it is difficult to get all of them together for the meeting.”

Kumari Rupam, an assistant professor of home science at Patna Women’s College, said: “Applications were invited in 2007 for promotions. But till date, we have not been promoted. Meetings were held several times with VCs to decide dates for the selection committee meeting. Screenings were also conducted. But the matter remained pending. We raised the issue at the senate meeting on Wednesday. We asked the VC as to why promotions were not being given priority and when we would be promoted. The VC replied that we would be promoted this Holi.”

Rupam said any teacher working for four to five years expects a promotion according to norms. “If we do not get promoted, we will be deprived of benefits. Apart from higher salary, we are missing out on calls from other universities to be examiners,” she added.

Suheli, an assistant professor of home science at Magadh Mahila College, said: “Other universities have already promoted the teachers of our batch (2003). In some varsities, the 2003 batch teachers are awaiting a second promotion whereas at PU promotions have not been given. Our promotions are due for around five years.”

Sources said varsities such as Magadh University and Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar Bihar University have already conducted the first level of promotions for the 2003 batch, in which several assistant professors rose to the rank of assistant professors senior grade.
