Militant dies after beating

Nagaon, Jan. 24: A suspected cadre of the Karbi Peoples Liberation Tigers (KPLT) died after he and four others were allegedly thrashed by the public for extortion in an interior village in Karbi Anglong district last night.

Bikrom Teron, who was admitted to Diphu civil hospital by police in a critical condition, died while undergoing treatment around 1am today.

Teron and four other KPLT cadres — Donsingh Tokbi, Mangalsingh Signer, Mansingh Rangpi and Rensingh Tokbi — were caught by villagers while they were going to Donghap under Dokmoka police station to extort money from. The people allegedly beat them up and took away their two AK-series rifles and later handed them over to the police. Karbi Anglong superintendent of police B.B. Chetry said all the five were admitted to hospital, with two of them in critical condition. “Signer is still in hospital. Three others were produced in court today and they were remanded in judicial custody.”

Villagers said Teron and Signer had threatened to use their rifles and this infuriated them and beat them up.

Teron hailed from Dengaon and was allegedly involved in several kidnapping and extortion cases in the area since 2010. “Extortion is not a new thing in these parts. We are creating awareness among the people to report all such matters to the police immediately. Yesterday’s incident is a big lesson to those involved in extortion activities,” said a Dokmoka police source.
