Sergeant punished

Sergeant Partho Sengupta, accused by Jadavpur University students of misbehaving with a van-puller carrying vegetables to their hostel, was closed on Wednesday. Departmental proceedings have been started against him. The students had staged a roadblock from 10.15pm on Tuesday to 8am on Wednesday to protest the misbehaviour.

Shot dead

A 32-year-old poultry owner in Howrah was shot dead by three youths on Wednesday evening. Asis Sutradhar was standing outside his store at Charaktala in Jagacha when three youths came on a motorbike and fired at him. Three persons have been held.

Fire in slum

A blaze gutted almost 30 shanties in Tangra on Wednesday. Ten tenders brought the blaze under control. Fire minister Javed Khan visited the spot. “We have decided to set up a fire station in Tangra so that prompt action can be taken in such cases,” Khan said.

Hoax mail

Nilanjan Bhattacharya, 30, a resident of Patuli, was arrested by a team of Haryana police on Wednesday for allegedly spoofing the Internet protocol address of a computer to send an email to a Gurgaon hotel, saying it would be attacked by Indian Mujahideen.

Baul singer critical

Baul singer Gour Kheapa was admitted to SSKM Hospital in “an extremely critical condition” on Wednesday afternoon after a car crash on the road to Santiniketan. He has multiple fractures and other injuries, including trauma to the head. He is being treated by a team of doctors,” said Tamal Kanti Ghosh, medical superintendent and vice-principal of SSKM Hospital.
