Mada workers protest over pay

Employees of Mineral Area Development Authority (Mada) began a phase-wise agitation on Monday with a daylong dharna at Randhir Verma Chowk.

The employees, who had gathered under the banner of Pradhikar Karmachari Sangharsh Samanwaya Samiti, were protesting against the delay in merger of Mada with Dhanbad Municipal Corporation, which has, in turn, held up their salaries for months.

The agitators, who, armed with placards, raised slogans like Nagar nigam mein samayojan kiya jaye (Merger with municipal corporation should be carried out) and Sampurna bakaya rasi ka avilamba bhugtan ho (All pending arrears should be immediately cleared without any delay), also threatened to go on a fast from January 30 to February 3.

“The state government is unnecessarily delaying the merger of Mada with Dhanbad Municipal Corporation even though Jharkhand Municipality Act, 2011, which grants for the same, was passed and notified by the state government in 2011 itself,” said convener of Pradhikar Karmachari Samanwaya Samiti Sudarshan Mahto.

General secretary of water supply division of Pradhikar Karmachari Sangharsh Samanwaya Samiti Shyam Narayan Dubey said all 1,800 staff had not received their salaries for 18-21 months (18 months for water division workers and 21 for sanitation and headquarter-based staff).

He added that they would be compelled to launch an indefinite strike from February 4, disrupting water supply and stalling sanitation work, if their demands were not met.
