Speeding truck mows down biker on NH-32

A 26-year-old resident of Biharís Aurangabad was killed in a hit and run near Bhuiphore temple on NH-32 late on Wednesday night, sparking protests.

Family members of victim Chunnu Singh and residents of nearby Saraidhela blocked NH-32 for more than two hours on Thursday morning, demanding compensation. The issue was resolved after Dhanbad BDO Vishal Kumar visited the spot, about 8km away from the coal capital, along with officer in charge of Govindpur Abhay Shankar, and promised Rs 10,000 for the victimís last rites.

The accident took place around 11.30pm on Wednesday when Chunnu Singh was returning to his in lawís house in Rajganj from Dhanbad, a distance of 20km, along with his brother in law Chatru Singh (30).

Chunnu who was riding the motorcycle, sustained severe head injuries when his two-wheeler was hit by a speeding truck that was trying to overtake them. He died on the spot.

Pillion rider Chatru lost consciousness as he fell into a nearby bush. Chatru regained consciousness around 3.30am and then walked 8km home to inform his family about the accident.

The family reached the accident spot around 5am and informed the police. Meanwhile, local residents, who had also gathered at the spot by then, set up an impromptu road blockade demanding compensation, in the process throwing traffic out of gear.

Speaking to newsmen, Chatru said they were returning home to Rajganj after attending a party when they met with the accident.

ďAs both men fell into the undergrowth along the road, no one saw them. We only came to know when the family members informed the police,Ē the officer-in-charge of Govindpur police station said.

The protestors also sought a ban on the movement of heavy vehicles on the road, which the BDO said he would look into.
