Halt-Metro timings in sync

Suburban train services at New Garia Halt have been extended by around an hour and half at night from Tuesday, to the relief of Metro commuters on their way to the interior of South 24-Parganas.

Earlier, the last train in the Sealdah South section left New Garia Halt at 9.29pm. Since the last Metro reaches the southern terminal station — Kavi Subhash or New Garia — at 10.34pm, south-bound commuters arriving after 9.29pm had no option but to take a rickshaw or walk to Garia station, 1.8km away, to catch a suburban train.

New Garia Halt and New Garia Metro station are around 100 metres from each other and linked by a subway.

Metro had on December 17 highlighted the plight of Metro commuters bound for various destinations in South 24-Parganas arriving at Kavi Subhash after 9.29pm.

From Tuesday, five pairs of local trains to and from Sealdah have been stopping at the halt after 9.29pm. The last train now stops at 10.54pm. The last Metro train arrives at Kavi Subhash at 10.35pm.

“The problem of connectivity has been resolved as 10 local trains on different routes — including that of Lakshmikantapur, Canning and Diamond Harbour — are stopping at the halt after 9.39pm,” said an Eastern Railway official.

“We had written to senior officials of Eastern Railway, requesting them to keep the halt open till the Metro services are on,” said Protyush Ghosh, the deputy general manager of Metro Railway.

The New Garia Halt had been opened in the last week of November by junior railway minister Adhir Chowdhury in an attempt to make life easier for people getting off at Kavi Subhash Metro station on their way to places like Baruipur, Canning, Diamond Harbour and Lakshmikantapur.
