Tezpur tourist dies in mishap

Gangtok, Dec. 23: A tourist from Tezpur died on the spot when the vehicle she was travelling in fell into a gorge while on its way to Chhangu Lake in Sikkim.

Sumi Dekka Kaushik, 27, a resident of Tezpur, Assam, died on the spot and the driver, Aita Bahadur Biswakarma, was injured and admitted to a hospital here.

There were 10 persons in the vehicle. The others sustained minor injuries.

Police sources said the accident occurred around 12.30pm when the vehicle went off the road near Rongchu bridge, nearly 16km from here, and rolled 200 feet into a ravine.

There were four tourists from Assam, including the victim and her husband, Kunal Kaushik, four from Bengal and two from Patna, in the vehicle. A case of rash and negligent driving has been lodged against the driver.
