Priyana, Arnabjan triumph

Guwahati, Dec. 23: Priyana Kalita and Arnabjan Lahkar annexed double crown in the Glaxo Smith Kline-NETF All Assam Ranking Tennis Championship that concluded at the North East Tennis Foundation premises here last evening.

Priyana and Arnabjan won the titles in the girls’ and boys’ under-14 and 18 events respectively.

Arnabjan got the better of Ankit Kashyap in both the finals. He won 6-1, 5-7, 10-6 for the under-14 title and 6-4, 7-6(4) for the under-18 crown.

Priyana lifted the under-14 crown, beating Nazia Ahmed 6-1, 6-1 and the under-18 title, prevailing over Rizuana Begum 6-1, 6-3.

Ronit Bora lifted the boys’ under-12 title, beating Pratyush Poddar 6-0, 6-1 in the final.

In the veterans’ doubles, Nabarun Saikia and Rajib Dutta won the above-35 title, defeating Rajiv Bora and Anupam Choudhury 6-4, 6-3.

Nabarun Saikia later partnered Anupam Choudhury to annex the above-45 crown, beating Diganta Thakur and Amlan Das 9-6 in a one-setter final. In the veterans’ mixed doubles, Randip Baruah and Santana Baruah beat Shahnawaz Zaffer and N. Zaffer 7-5, 7-5 for the title.

India Club Opens: The 15th Royal Global School India Club Open also got under way at the India Club courts here today with an upset in the under-12 boys’ event. Fourth seed Anurag Buragohain was shocked by unseeded Arunesh Sarma.

The latter won the one setter second round match 4-1

Ronit Bora, Rohan Das, Sh. Md Iftikhar, Debashish Medhi, Swapnil Deka, Angshuman Phukan, Anurag Bora and Arith Bhuyan today booked quarter-final berths in the under-12 boys’ event.
