Tableau rejection irks MP

New Delhi, Dec. 17: AGP Rajya Sabha MP Kumar Deepak Das today protested against the rejection of a proposal for a Republic Day parade tableau showcasing the 13th century Ahom general Sukapha.

Das said the Centre had insulted the feelings of the Assamese people by calling Sukhapa a foreigner. “This is an outright insult to the sentiments of the people of Assam. The soul of Assam is linked with Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom kingdom,” Das said in a special mention today.

Assam’s department of culture had made a presentation depicting Sukapha to the Republic Day parade scrutiny committee. The proposal was rejected.

Das urged the government to inquire into the matter and ensure that steps are taken to assuage the hurt feelings in Assam.

Describing the Ahom general as a great fighter and patriot who laid the foundation for modern Assam, Das said the kingdom established by Sukapha in 1228 existed for six centuries and had unified various tribal and non-tribal people of the Northeast.
