Cricketer crunch hits Santipur

Guwahati, Dec. 16: The Santipur Athletic Club here is in doldrums after being disaffiliated from the Guwahati Sports Association as a football club and is also uncertain about participating in the Guwahati cricket league in the coming season.

With most of its players having signed up for other clubs for the season ahead, the historic club had to stay away from the ongoing Ankurjyoti Challenge cricket tournament this season and is still uncertain about participation in other tournaments, including the district first division league.

Talking to The Telegraph while announcing the diamond jubilee year celebration programme, reception committee chairman and one of the senior-most office-bearers of the club, Ashwini Goswami, today said: “We are facing some internal problems regarding the cricket team.”

He admitted that some clubs had recruited their players and the club currently did not have a team.

The Guwahati league is slated for February.

The introduction of contract money by clubs like Navarang and Bud Cricket, among others, have helped them recruit some of the best cricketers of the city.

Santipur Athletic Club has the history of producing some of the best cricketers for the state, including Amal Das, Dipak Das, Kamal Das, Sushil Uzir, Pabitra Dutta, Riyazul Haque, Abu Nechim Ahmed, Parvez Aziz and others in the last six decades.

Goswami, however, said the club would work towards revamping both cricket and football in the year ahead.

“We propose the use the Gopalananda Ashram ground for football training,” Goswami said.

Regarding the diamond jubilee celebration, he said it would start on December 23 with flag hoisting and a cultural procession and would comprise various competitions like children’s dance, painting, table tennis, recitation, extempore, quiz and debate, among others, in the ensuing month before the concluding ceremony on January 19 and 20.
