Green Valley sign Shankar Maitra

Guwahati, Dec. 14: Green Valley Sports Club here have signed former India under-19 coach Shankar Maitra as the coach for their second division I-League campaign in the ensuing season.

The AFC B-licence holder had earlier coached the Assam team in their triumphant campaign in the 33rd National Games here in 2007. He was with Peerless Sports Club, Calcutta, in the last season.

Confirming the development, Green Valley general secretary Ibocha Singh said Maitra would join the club’s camp here on Saturday.

He also hinted that the club could sign at least three players, including a foreigner, from Calcutta clubs. “Besides, we are looking for talented players from the Northeast because it is one of the major football-breeding regions of the nation,” he added.

Maitra’s deal was finalised during club president Pulak Goswami’s recent trip to Calcutta. The player recruitment will be finalised after Goswami, who is currently in Delhi, returns to the city.
