Valverde to coach Valencia

Madrid: Valencia have agreed to appoint Ernesto Valverde to replace Mauricio Pellegrino as their new coach until the end of the season, the Spanish club said on Monday. Pellegrino was sacked on Saturday after a 2-5 home defeat to Real Sociedad left the side 12th in La Liga. Valverde led Olympiakos Piraeus to a Greek league and Cup double last season and has extensive experience in La Liga.

Life ban

London: Uefa has increased Malta defender Kevin Sammut’s match-fixing ban from 10 years to life, European soccer’s governing body said on Monday.
The player was found guilty of match-fixing over the Euro 2008 qualifier between Norway and Malta, a game his country lost 4-0.
“Sammut has been banned from exercising any football-related activity for life by the Uefa,” Uefa said in a statement.

Sania view

Raipur: Sania Mirza on Monday said that people should not always expect a win from sportspersons and should learn to take their defeat in a positive way. “Every player cannot win all the tournaments. That doesn’t mean one should look at them in a negative way,” the 26-year-old told reporters on the sidelines of Gondwana Cup which started here.

Chela retires

Buenos Aires: Juan Ignacio Chela says he is retiring from professional tennis, leaving with six ATP singles titles and three in doubles - all on clay. The 33-year-old Argentine has been hinting at retirement for weeks, and he announced it Monday on his Twitter account. Chela reached three Grand Slam quarter finals — the French Open in 2004 and 2011, and the US Open in 2007.

Youth boxing

New Delhi: India’s Lalitha Polipalli Prasad (49kg) advanced to the quarter finals of the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Yerevan with another scintillating performance on Monday. The 17-year-old outplayed Issac Pinto of Ecuador 15-5 to win on points in a pre-quarter final bout.
Sandeep Sharma (75kg) also made his way into the quarters with a resounding victory over European Junior Championships bronze medallist Berika Mhechadze of Georgia.

Prize money

Sofia: Prize money for the 2013 World Match Play Championship will rise to 3 million euros ($3.90 million), Per Ericsson, president of event management for sponsors Volvo said on Monday. The figure marks a nine percent increase over the 2012 total of 2.75 million euros.

Bulgaria will host a EuropeanTour event for the first time when the 2013 World Match Play is staged at the resort of Thracian Cliffs from May 16-19.

PCB happy

Bangalore: The four-member Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) inspection team, led by their GM (media affairs) Nadeem Sarwar, on Monday inspected the security arrangements and facilities for the T20 match against India to be played at the at the Chinnaswamy on December 25 and seemed satisfied with the arrangements.
