13 teams to vie for cricket honours

Guwahati, Dec. 2: Altogether 13 leading teams of the state, including one from Naharkatiya, will fight for the honours in the 21st Ankurjyoti Challenge invitation cricket tournament for R.L. Singhania and Mohini Devi Singhania Trophy at Judges Field here from Wednesday.

Hosts Ankurjyoti Club will meet Brahmaputra Boys Club in the inaugural match.

“Apart from all the leading clubs of the city, Naharkatia Cricket Association are also participating in the knockout tournament. They will play from the quarter-finals onwards,” Ankurjyoti Club president Rana Goswami said today. “We propose to the hold the semi-finals and final as day/night affairs,” he added. The semi-finals will be held on December 17 and 18 and the final on December 20.

Asked if the floodlights at the ground concerned will be sufficient for cricket given the fog factor, Goswami said the matches will start by 2pm and would end by 7.30pm. “Therefore, fog cannot affect the proceedings,” he said. Fog descends in the city by 8.30pm with the present weather condition.

On holding the tournament in two-day match format, as proposed by most of the participating teams in the last few editions, Goswami said it was not affordable because of the unavailability of ground and the huge expense as rent.

“It is not affordable on our part to bear the expense on ground rent at a rate of Rs 3,000 per day for so long a period,” he said.

The club could not hold the tournament last year because of lack of sponsorship.

The club will also host the 3rd Ashwini Rajbangshi trophy inter-institution cricket tournament at the Latasil ground simultaneously from Wednesday. About 24 teams are expected to participate, said club’s general secretary Bablu Choudhury.
