Heroes out of common people
- Anandalok awards for contribution in education, sports, health & bravery

Siliguri, Nov. 30: Four persons, who are otherwise common faces, from the region were felicitated at the Officer’s Choice Anandalok Salaam Bengal awards here today for their contribution in different fields

The event, organised by Anandalok in association with Officer’s Choice, was held at Dinabandhu Mancha.

“The initiative has become a platform to recognise and salute the efforts of people in Bengal and create awareness of their work in education, medical and health services, sports and bravery,” said an organiser.

A primary schoolteacher from Dinhata in Cooch Behar was awarded in education category. Rabi Burman spends his salary to buy books and distributes them among needy students in Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and Darjeeling. “I travel on my bicycle and provide books to children and youths.”

Next in line was Surojit Biswas, a resident of Gangarampur in South Dinajpur. Surojit has been a volleyball coach since 1965. “I have been making players over decades, several of whom had played in different tourneys.”

Soumendra Kumar Das of Malda has engaged himself in spreading awareness of health among women. “I started training women in association with an NGO so that they can grow fresh vegetables for their own consumption. This would increase nourishment and make their babies healthy.”

Kalyan Kumar Guha of Raiganj was awarded for bravery. “It was on January 2008 that I climbed a six-ft-high wall and saved three children from a building that was on fire,” he said.

Singers Subhamita and Anupam Roy performed at the event.
