Priyana and Nikshep win

Guwahati, Nov. 30: B.R. Nikshep of Karnataka and Priyana Kalita of Assam annexed the boys’ and girls’ singles crowns respectively in the 3rd India Club-AITA Champion Series under-16 tennis tournament at India Club courts here today.

Nikshep overcame a stiff challenge from local lad Bijoy Kr Mohanty of Assam to clinch a 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) victory in the final.

In the semi-finals yesterday, Nikshep defeated second seed Assam boy Parikshit Somani 6-3, 6-1 while Mohanty overcame third seed Ishaque Eqbal of Bengal 6-1, 6-1. Mohanty had yesterday partnered Somani to beat Aswin Dhanasamy of Tamil Nadu and Eqbal 6-3, 6-2 for the boys’ doubles title.

The girls’ under-16 final, however, saw a smooth sail for local girl Priyana Kalita over another state girl, Suranjeeta Saikia, in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

In the semi-finals on Wednesday, Kalita overcame stiff challenge from fourth seed Gujarat girl Rutvi Shah for a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory.

On the other hand, Suranjita Saikia upset second seed Shilpi S. Das of Odisha 6-4, 7-5 in the other semi-finals.
