Doctor suicide

A 57-year-old doctor and professor in an advanced stage of Parkinson’s disease committed suicide by jumping off the fourth floor of the Indian Institute of Health and Hygiene on CR Avenue on Tuesday afternoon.

Ranadeb Biswas, who headed the department of preventive and social medicine at the institute, was found lying dead on adjoining Colootola Street. “We have not found any suicide note but preliminary investigation suggests he committed suicide,” said a police officer.

Ranadeb’s wife Kanta, also a doctor, said he had been suffering from the disease for six years. The couple have a daughter, who is in the first year of college.

The Teghoria resident jumped to his death while his caretaker, who used to help him on to his wheelchair, had gone for lunch. “I left him in his department on the second floor. He was better on Tuesday and did not need a wheelchair,” said the caretaker.

An employee of the institute saw the doctor walk slowly to the elevator. On being asked, Biswas said he was going to the fourth floor to take a class. Another colleague saw him walk across the corridor on the fourth floor smoking. Several cigarette butts were found near the window through which he had jumped.

Police said the family did not suspect foul play and did not lodge any complaint.
