Anita, Rumi post big wins

- Good day for Assam with Minu Basumatary in last eight

Guwahati, Nov. 26: Host Assamís pugilist Anita Kahar knocked out her Odisha opponent Deepika Maharana 9-1 in a preliminary round bout to storm into the light flyweight (45-48kg) category quarter-final in the 13th Senior National Womenís Boxing Championship at Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium here today.

The bout ended in the first round itself with referee Devendra Singh Jeena stopping play.

Rumi Gogoi of Assam also made it to the round of eight in the lightweight (57-60kg) category, thrashing Kanishka Srivastava of Uttar Pradesh 10-0 when referee Ajay Salvi stopped play in the second round.

Another home girl, Sanasri Brahma, however, bit the dust, going down to Bengal opponent Dolly Singh 11-17 in the flyweight (48-51 kg) preliminary round.

Minu Basumatary registered an emphatic 21-2 victory over Uttarakhand opponent Pooja Yadav in the light welter weight (60-64 kg) event to book a quarter-final berth.

The bout lasted only three rounds before referee Sisir Kumar Panigrahi stopped play.

In other bouts of the day, Nagaland girl T. Temsunaro Tsudir inflicted a 17-6 defeat on Sonam of Rajasthan.

Rebecca Lalinmawii of Mizoram tamed G. Tulsiveni of Chhattisgarh 14-4. Jahnavi Gogoi of Railways went down to Sudesh of Police 11-14. Sh. Sarjubala Devi of Manipur routed Madhya Pradesh girl Preeti Soni 21-1 in the light flyweight event.

Garo Hills victorious

Garo Hills Cricket Association defeated All Jaintia Cricket Association by 65 runs in the first group B match of the under-25 inter-district cricket tournament, organised by the Meghalaya Cricket Association at the Polo Ground in Shillong today, adds our Shillong correspondent.

Garo Hills won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 167 in 33.4 overs. In reply, All Jaintia were bundled out for 102 in 30.3 overs.

Tenchang Sangma topscored for Garo Hills with 36 while Heipormi Langbang took three wickets for All Jaintia CA.Ianco Shira of Garo Hills claimed three wickets. Garo Hills will meet Ri-Bhoi Cricket Association tomorrow.
