Killer tank

Bhopal, Nov. 19: A civic water tank atop a tall tower collapsed in the dead of night in Bhopal, releasing a “10-feet-high” wall of water that smashed houses and shanties in a slum and left eight persons dead and more than 50 injured.

State urban development minister Babulal Gaur, 78, and daughter-in-law Krishna, the 51-year-old mayor, faced an angry mob when they arrived around 7am, some six hours after the disaster that released three lakh gallons of water into Saibaba Colony.

The residents claimed the 13-year-old tank had been leaking for a fortnight but the civic authorities had done nothing despite repeated appeals. They alleged that rescue operations were delayed because the fire brigade, police and ambulances took almost an hour to arrive.

Meteor show

New Delhi (PTI): An array of meteor showers is expected to light up the sky from Tuesday night, the International Meteor Organisation has predicted. Around 10 to 15 meteors per hour are expected to be seen from 2am onwards. Observers should look east to spot the meteors.

Delhi fire

New Delhi (PTI): A security guard was charred to death when a fire broke out in Himalaya House, a 15 storeyed building housing commercial establishments, on Monday. The body of Jai Bhagwan, 52, was recovered from the eighth floor. The fire was doused a little after noon.

Savita ripples

London (PTI): The Irish cabinet will take up a report of an expert group on abortion on Tuesday amid protests over the death of an Indian dentist. Savita Halappanavar, 31, died of blood poisoning in an Irish hospital last month after doctors refused to terminate her pregnancy despite telling her that she was miscarrying.

HC land order

Bangalore (PTI): Karnataka High Court has quashed a Lokayukta court order initiating proceedings against JDS leader and former Karnataka chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy in a land denotification case. The court ordered the matter be considered afresh.

Karuna summons

Chennai, Nov. 19 (PTI): A court has issued summons to DMK President M. Karunanidhi and S. Selvam, the publisher and editor of Tamil daily Murasoli, to appear before it on December 18 in a defamation case filed by the Tamil Nadu government.

The complaint was filed against Karunanidhi for making comments allegedly defaming a minister and Selvam for publishing them.
