Imphal, Nov. 14: Manipur governor Gurbachan Jagat today inaugurated the 37th junior national badminton championship at the Khuman Lampak indoor stadium with a colourful cultural programme. The tournament is organised by the Manipur Badminton Association.

Altogether 400 players from 33 teams and 200 officials are taking part in the tournament. These include 22 players from the host state.

Parliamentary secretary M. Prithviraj Singh, who also attended the opening programme, said China was dominating the badminton scene after London Olympics and India could join the world class players. Bijoy Koijam, president of Manipur Olympic Association and Manipur Badminton Association said though Manipur excelled in various disciplines, there were just a few badminton players. The championship would help in hunting talent from the country in general and the Northeast in particular, he said. The tournament will continue till November 18.
