Two girls drown in Giridih

Hazaribagh, Sept. 19: Two girl students of a government middle school drowned in a pond in Giridih districtís Jamua block today.

Sources said the girls, part of a group of five who had gone to collect clay for the upcoming Karma festival, were residents of Dharchanchi village of the block, 65 km from the district headquarters.

Though a group of residents reached the pond immediately after the news of the drowning spread, it took them close to an hour to recover the bodies, which they did after draining the water out from a side of the pond. The police later recovered the bodies and sent it to Giridih sadar hospital for post-mortem.

The incident is supposed to have taken place when Vinita Kumari, Gudiya Kumari, Kajal Kumari, Sunita Kumari and Shalu Kumari decided to take a bath around 12.30pm. Vinita (13) and Gudiya (14) slipped and fell into the water.

Zilla parishad chairperson Muniya Devi met the family of the victims and promised to recommend their names for Indira Awaas Yojana.
