Infant found dead, finger at mother

A baby was found floating in a well at a Chowka village in Seraikela-Kharsawan district on Sunday morning, triggering speculations that his mother had killed him.

Circumstantial evidences suggest that 35-year-old Kalika Mahtain threw her three-month-old son in the well located near her house at Khunti village. A mother of three, Kalika is absconding.

The suspect’s farmer husband, Mohan Mahto, said that she left home with the baby on Friday evening on the pretext of visiting a relative. However, Kalika did not return home that night.

“I went to the relative’s place but found out that she had not gone there. Thereafter, I lodged a missing report with Chowka police. Eventually, my wife returned home on Saturday evening but without the baby. When I asked about him, she said she had left him to sleep under a tree. But I did not find him there,” Mohan told The Telegraph.

The next morning, Mohan started searching for the baby in adjoining Khunti forest. He took Kalika along with him. While the search was on, a villager discovered the baby’s body in the well around 11am.

As the news reached Mohan, he rushed to his home while Kalika stayed back in the jungle. She did not return home till late evening.

Mohan said he did not quarrel with his wife and everything was fine between them.

The couple had two more sons — one aged eight years and the other four years.

Officer in charge of Chowka police station Awadh Ram Singh said that mystery shrouded the case. “Things will be clear once we talk to the baby’s mother,” Singh added.
