Guwahati, Sept. 14: The Supreme Court today issued a notice to Assam governor and Dibrugarh University chancellor J.B. Patnaik on alleged unfair practices adopted during appointment of present vice-chancellor K.K. Deka in 2007.
Uddip Jyoti Gogoi, a law student and former assistant general secretary of the Dibrugarh University Postgraduate Students’ Union, had filed a petition in the apex court last month alleging that the office of the chancellor had violated rules and clauses of the Dibrugarh University Act, 1965, during the appointment process.
Former Assam governor Lt Gen. (retd) Ajai Singh was then the chancellor of the university.
Gogoi told The Telegraph that his case came up for hearing in the Supreme Court today. He said his lawyer, U. Hazarika, had informed him that the court had issued the notice, asking for an explanation as to why Deka’s appointment should not be made null and void.
