NFR opens archery arena

Guwahati, Sept. 12: The Northeast Frontier Railway Sports Association (NFRSA) took a major step in its bid to set up an academy for the region’s archers by opening a 900-square metre archery arena in the NFR Stadium at Maligaon here today.

“As of now, preference will be given to archers from our organisation. We had recruited five archers who will be training here. However, given the talent pool that the region has, we would welcome archers from outside the organisation as well,” R.S. Virdhi, general manager, NF Railway, told reporters after inaugurating the arena.

The NFRSA had included archery in its gamut for the first time in 2009, following which five archers were recruited. “In 2009-10, Pratima Boro, Parashan Nath, Hemanta Basumatary were recruited through talent scouting while Belsri Narzary was appointed after an open advertisement. The four have taken part in inter-railway and national tournaments since. In 2011-12, another archer, Satbir Kaur was appointed,” Mukul Marwah, president of the association, said.

On NFR’s plans to set up a full-fledged academy, Marwah said, “Once we are able to find sufficient land for the project and a team of 12 to 15 archers, we will go ahead with it.”
