70-year-old woman found dead

Silchar, Sept. 10: The murder of a septuagenarian woman in her Ranghirkhari Road apartment last night has led to a sense of fear and insecurity among flat owners in Silchar.

Police said 70-year-old Kanchan Chacher who owned a sweet shop half a kilometre from her flat, was found dead in the drawing room of her flat around 8.30pm by some of her shop assistants, who lived with her in the same flat.

They entered the flat with a spare key.

Kanchan’s married daughter Kanta Nayar, who lives at Gopalganj, said she talked to her mother around 8pm and found her quite normal and composed.

Kanta spoke to her daily at the same time.

However, around 9pm, one of the shop assistants called her to inform that Kanchan was lying still inside.

She was taken to a local nursing home from where she was sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital at Ghoongur, where the doctors pronounced her “brought dead”.

The police are suspecting a newly appointed domestic help, who has been missing since the murder.

They said there were some strangulation marks on her throat.

When police reached the flat, they found an almirah was forcefully opened and suspect that some cash and valuables could be missing. A CCTV installed in the apartment was also broken.

The body was sent to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital today for post-mortem. Kanchan’s son, Anil, who works in Andhra Pradesh, is expected to reach here this evening.
