GTC edge past Navajyoti

GSA LEAGUE

Guwahati, Aug. 26: Gauhati Town Club rode a goal by striker Jackson Victor to edge past Navajyoti Club 1-0 in a match of the Abhishek Motors RG Baruah Trophy Guwahati Super Division football league at Nehru Stadium here today.

After a goalless first half, Jackson connected a free kick by K. Kamei in the 49th minute, heading the ball high into the net. Navajyoti goalkeeper Subhajit Barman, for once, was beaten, as till then, he could do no wrong, making as many as three saves in the first half. GTC lacked cohesion, as the African duo of Jackson and Enondji Patrick Arol were guilty of not being able to finish off the moves, most of them prior to the lemon break. The Navajyoti custodian made an acrobatic save in the 46th minute, after a corner from Deepak Barman was headed by Arol towards the goal. However, there was a phase of play, when they apparently took control of the midfield, through short passes and some deft footwork.

However, Town Club kept the pressure on and managed to hold on to their 1-0 lead till the final whistle.

With this win, GTC gained three points to move to an overall tally of six points from seven matches. Navajyoti, however, are sitting pretty on 11 points from seven matches.

In the GSA B division football league played on the second turf here today, Ganga Sports Club blanked Chandmari Sports Club 3-0, while Narengi SC edged past Kamrupa FC 1-0.
