The Metro service was disrupted on Friday evening after sparks and smoke were spotted emanating from the undercarriage of a Kavi Subhas-bound air-conditioned train while it was entering Esplanade station.
Passengers on the train were evacuated and the service was suspended between Central and Maidan stations immediately after the sparks and smoke were seen at 8.41pm.
Services could not be restored till 9.45pm, the scheduled departure of the last train from either terminal. The service between Central and Dum Dum stations in the north and between Maidan and Kavi Subhash stations in the south was uninterrupted.
“The driver of the train noticed sparks and smoke on the undercarriage of the rake and immediately alerted the control room. A decision was taken to stop the rake at Esplanade station. The passengers were requested to vacate the train,” said a Metro spokesperson.
“We sensed something amiss when the train remained stationary even beyond the scheduled stop time. Suddenly we were told through the public address system to vacate the compartments. On stepping out we smelt something burning,” said Sourav Agarwal, who was on his way home to Bhowanipore.
